Measurement Instruments

Optical, electrical and mechanical properties of solids with flat surfaces are investigated with different analytical methods. We use SCOUT, Igor Pro, SpectraRay, Diffrac.EVA and OPUS for data processing.

Measuring optical properties

Spectrophotometric measurements:
  • of transmission, total reflection and absorption with
    • UV-VIS-2-Beamspectrometer Varian Cary 5E: 200 nm – 3200 nm
    • Vacuum-FTIR-Spectrometer Bruker Vertex 70V:
      8000 cm-1- 8 cm-1, max. resolution 0.16 cm-1
  • Determination of optical constants n(λ), k(λ) from T(λ), R(λ),
  • Sample geometry 10 mm x 10 mm – 20 mm x 30 mm (for larger sample sizes measurements at edges are possible
  • Cell holder (cuvette holder) for liquids is available
  • ATR (Diamond), λ < 19 µm = WZ > 525 cm-1

Ellipsometric measurements:
  • spectral range of 0.28 µm - 2.4 µm
  • varying angles of incidence: 5° steps from 40° - 90°
  • Determination of optical constants n(λ), k(λ) from ∆(λ), Ψ(λ)
  • Thickness determination of ultrathin films
